SCIMGA's 2024 Plant Sale

MEMBER INFORMATION

MESSAGE FROM MARY SHAFFER, PLANT COMMITTEE CHAIR
January Information:

The 7th annual SCIMGA Plant Sale is scheduled for Saturday May 18, 2024 from 9- Noon on the Plaza at the Bartholomew County Public Library.
The rain date is scheduled for the following Saturday, May 25th, 9-Noon.

For those of you that enjoy growing herbs and plants from seed think unique and please start growing your plants now, if you have not already started.  As in 2023, I would like to see a variety of herbs sold at the sale this year.  Consider growing rosemary, basil, dill, cilantro, fennel, marjoram, parsley, thyme.  We need oregano and chives, but we definitely need other herbs as well.  I do not believe we had any rosemary last year and that is an herb that the attendees request.

The vegetable and tomato plants sold out quickly last year.
Please consider growing those plants again and possibly adding something new this year.

In 2023 we focused on not having large amounts of the same, common perennials, herbs, annuals, etc. brought by numerous members and it seemed to work. Please contact me, as you did last year, no later than May 1st and let me know the plants that you are thinking about bringing and a rough number.   You can email me or send me a text. My telephone number is 812-350-3195.  Please do not be offended if I ask you to not bring a particular plant or to bring less of that plant.  The intent is to reduce the number of same types of very common plants.

At the end of the 2023 Plant Sale, we only had one large box of plants that did not sell.
We basically sold out of everything.  We started the sale with roughly 600 plants.

Please review the "Forbidden Pots" document below that Chris Waterfall created with the help of other SCIMGA members.
We will need to follow those guidelines when we start potting our plants for the sale.

Asian Jumping Worms are an invasive species.  We must educate ourselves to protect our gardens and the plants that will be sold at the sale.

As we prepare for the 2024 Plant Sale, please begin reviewing the SCIMGA website for updated 2024 Plant Sale information.
We will add new information, on a monthly basis, leading up to the May 18th Plant Sale.

Thanks,
Mary Shaffer

 Forbidden Pots

Certain pots and plants are not to be used for the SCIMGA Plant Sale.
✔ Any pot that is trademarked/registered/copyrighted
✓ Any plant that is trademarked/registered/copyrighted

   What is the issue?
✓ Some pots are themselves trademarked/registered/copyrighted
      (constructed
differently from conventional pots)
✓ Plants can also be trademarked/registered/copyrighted

   If we use trademarked/registered/copyrighted pots......
✓  It looks like the plants in them are trademarked/registered/copyrighted
       which
they are not (WE grew or divided or otherwise propagated them)

✓ It is illegal to propagate a trademarked/registered/copyrighted plant
o Granted, after a while, you may not remember if a plant was trademarked when purchased

and therefore not to be propagated

o And one may not know the nursery history of a plant you were given

So, to avoid the appearance of fraud
       (
even though we've stated that our plants are
grown by Master Gardeners,
which should counter the information on the
        trademarked
/registered/copyrighted pots), we must not
use
